Student Poem of the Month — September 2003

Fears of Middle School   © by   Ruth Andrews

My name is Ruth.
I’m in the sixth grade.
This is my story of how I was afraid.

My palms were sweaty.
I had butterflies.
The thought of Middle School
Took me by surprise.

The halls were long.
The classes were, too.
The homework was more than I thought I could do.

But after a month,
Things seemed to change.
Those long halls just weren’t so strange.

The classes flew by,
And that’s not a lie.
I think it’s because the teachers were fine.

As homework got better,
I became a “non-sweater.”
My stomach settled down,
And my frown turned upside down.

So my fears of sixth grade are drifting away.
But, oh!
Now I’m just thinking,
What about seventh grade!?!
