The Big Snow

©  by  Ellen Turlington Johnston-Hale

It snowed all day and all night, too,
And made the ground which used to be
Beneath my feet
Look very much as though it grew
Up to my knees.
It hugged the bony winter trees
And made them fat and marble bright.
The swirling flakes pounced on my cat
And turned her white
And made the puppy bounce and yap
And leap and race and lap them up.
I flopped down flat upon a hill and left a spot
That looked just like an angel stopped,
All soft and still,
And rested there a little while.
The world looked like a pillow fight
With flying flakes like icy feathers
Fast and swirled. I slid and glided,
Raced and twirled
And sledded down a glassy hill while Old Man Winter
Watched me play and sent more flurries
Down my way to tumble in, to toss and taste.
(I let one melt right on my tongue) -
Oh what a magic wonderland when snow flakes fall
And all the world is sparkling bright
And right and young!
