Hi, I wanted to let you know about a poetry reading that we will have at Quail Ridge Books and Music on Friday, August 22 at 7:00 PM. Three award winning North Carolina poets will be reading from their newest books. Please come and join for this wonderful evening of poetry. The poets are

David Amen, Christening the Dancer

"The poems of Christening the Dancer come from 'an abandoned town called sanity,' though they may seem strange to some readers. But John Amen recognizes a different and more urgent kind of sanity than the ordinary world aspires to. In these lines anger, exasperation, and a poet's fury deliver a world that Magritte would recognize, that Max Ernst would celebrate. It is–thank God–strong stuff." —Fred Chappell

Sarah Lindsay, Mount Clutter

"Readers who had the good luck to discover the daring scope of subject, the brilliance of image and language of Sarah Lindsay's first book, Primate Behavior, will not be surprised to find in Mount Clutter, further ranges: poem after poem startling, powerful, authentic, and each of them, as in her first collection, refracting her underlying metaphor in which the 'other' world, of non-human life, of places remote in time or some other dimension, of myth and its apparitions, again and again reveals the unrepeatable inner life that is our own. She is a true original, and the authority of her lines makes her complex subject a vision that beckons the reader after it into unexpected recognitions." — W. S. Merwin

David Manning, Out After Dark

David has won numerous awards his poetry. In this latest book he examines the night, both it's joys and terrors in a succinct and moving style.

If you have any questions please do call or send a note. René Martin, Events Coordinator, Quail Ridge Books and Music, 919 828-7912, 3522 Wade Ave, Raleigh, NC 27607

Paul Allen original songs and poems. Books: AMERICAN CRAWL (Vassar Miller Poetry Prize, University of North Texas Press, 1997), THE CLEAN PLATE CLUB (forthcoming 2004, Salmon Publishing Ltd., Ireland). CD, THE MAN WITH THE HARDEST BELLY: POEMS & SONGS, 2001. Poetry editor, CRAZYHORSE. I sure could use some friendly, tolerant faces in the audience!! As some of my friends in NCPS know, I'm a poet who also writes songs. In my readings I offer a few songs. But on July 23, 24, 25 I'll be offering several songs and a poem or two when I perform with the Swannanoa Performance Lab. I'm trying to "come out" more with my music, and some friendly, tolerant faces would help a lot. The lab is a class I'm taking with 7 others. Here's the schedule. I hope you can make it. Wed 23: Fiddle and Bow, Winston-Salem; Thurs 24: Charlotte Folk Music Society, Charlotte; Fri 25: The Purple Onion, Saluda. Let me know if you need directions to the venues. Thanks, Paul (Poetry Society of South Carolina)

Requesting Judges for Poetry Competition March 28 or April 4 Four times a year, Raleigh Charter H.S. cancels regular classes for special days called Flex Days. Flex Days allow teachers and students to opportunity to explore topics in depth often across disciplines. One of the highlights of the Flex Days this March/April will be a Poetry Competition. Students will read various poems and will be asked to discuss the poem and prepare a short presentation and analysis of the poem. We would like to bring in poets from the community to act as judges of our students’ analyses. The time commitment we would ask is one hour either from 10:30-11:30 a.m. or 1:30-2:30 p.m. on Friday, March 28 or Friday, April 4. If you would be interested in volunteering, please e-mail Melanie Lachance at mlachance@raleighcharterhs.org or phone at 919-715-1155. Raleigh Charter High School is located in downtown Raleigh, just North of Peace College.
