Brockman-Campbell Book Award
Postmark Deadline: May 1, 2008
ELIGIBILITY
- The contest is open to poets who published a book-length volume of poetry in 2007.
Entrants must be native-born North Carolinians or current residents who have lived
in the state for at least three years at the time of the book’s publication.
- To be considered, a book must be a first edition by a single author, and it must
contain more than 20 pages of poetry. Anthologies are not acceptable. The book
must have a 2007 copyright date, or the publisher must certify the copyright
by letter.
- An entry containing poems included in a previous volume that won the Brockman-Campbell
Book Award is not eligible.
REWARDS
- The Brockman-Campbell winner will be notified by July 1, 2008, and will be invited
to read at the North Carolina Poetry Society's September 20, 2008, meeting, to be
held at the Weymouth Center for the Arts & Humanities in Southern Pines, NC.
- A cash prize of $200 will be presented to one winner only.
SUBMISSIONS
- Each submission should include:
- one copy of the book,
- a biographical sketch of the author,
- a stamped postcard (for acknowledging receipt
of the book), and
- a business-sized, stamped, self-addressed envelope
for the announcement of the winner.
- The entry may be submitted:
- by the poet, or
- by the book publisher.
- Entry fee:
- Members of the Poetry Society pay no entry fee.
- The fee for non-members is $10. (Make checks
payable to the North Carolina Poetry Society.)

CONTEST JUDGE
- The name of this year's (2008) book contest judge will be posted here
following the contest deadline, along with a brief biographical sketch.
- The NCPS thanks Rigoberto González for judging last year's contest.
Rigoberto González is the author of two poetry books, So Often the Pitcher
Goes to Water until It Breaks, a National Poetry Series selection, and
Other Fugitives and Other Strangers; two bilingual children’s books:
Soledad Sigh-Sighs / Soledad Suspiros and Antonio’s Card / La tarjeta
de Antonio, which was a finalist for a Lambda Literary Award; the novel
Crossing Vines, winner of ForeWord Magazine’s Fiction Book of the
Year Award; and a memoir, Butterfly Boy: Memories of a Chicano Mariposa.
The recipient of Guggenheim and NEA fellowships, and of various international
artist residencies, including stays in Spain, Brazil, Costa Rica, and Scotland,
he writes twice a month a Latino book column, now entering its fifth year, for
the El Paso Times of Texas. He is contributing editor for Poets and
Writers Magazine, is a member of the National Book Critics Circle, and is on
the Advisory Circle of Con Tinta, a collective of Chicano / Latino activist
writers. He lives and works in New York City.
