In 1932, six dedicated writers began meeting in their own homes for the purpose of promoting the reading, writing, and appreciation of poetry.  Since then the North Carolina Poetry Society has steadily grown into a launching platform for hundreds of poets from North Carolina and beyond.

The need for a means of recognition of the best of these poems grew among the membership until, in 1965, the first issue of Award Winning Poems was published.  The first few annual issues were done "in house" using duplicating machines belonging to members.  Numerous cover styles were adopted over time, and the formative years saw AWP grow into a very reputable publication.

In 1987 the Board of Directors voted to dedicate that issue of Award Winning Poems to Christine Rose Sloan, a long-time member and ardent supporter of the Poetry Society.   In 2003 the name of the anthology was changed to Pinesong Awards, but the tradition of dedicating each issue to a deserving member continues.

Please note that the texts of these anthology dedications are faithful to the originals, but that some of the accompanying photographs are different. In addition, as a web site enhancement, a representative poem by each dedicatee follows his/her dedication text, and brief biographical update notes have been added in some instances.
